 Member Spotlight: Bill Burns

William J. Burns is a retired member of ISM-Nashville.  Most of us know him simply as Bill; a friend, a mentor, always willing to share an experience or offer support for our seemingly modern business problems.   Bill graduated from Vanderbilt University in 1950 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Administration, and immediately pursued a MBA with a minor in Finance from Northwestern University, graduating in late 1951.  He soon joined the National Life and Accident Insurance Company on November 11, 1951 as a Supervisor.  By 1953, he transitioned to the Purchasing Department and was promoted to Purchasing Agent.  Throughout his career with the National Life and Accident Insurance Company, he continued to work his way up the corporate ladder, with successive promotions until reaching Vice President in 1982.  The National Life and Accident Insurance company and NLT Corporation were joined together to form the current American General Life and Accident Insurance Company.  Bill Burns officially retired in February, 1985.

Bill was also very active in the military and the community.  He joined the National Guard in 1951 and ultimately retired with a rank of Brigadier General in February, 1986.  His military designations include The Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Achievement Medal, and the Army Commendation Medal.  In the community, he was a member of the Nashville Booster Club, Nashville Chamber of Commerce, served as president of the Nashville Chapter of the Administrative Management Society, was commissioned a Kentucky Colonel, served as Nashville & Davidson County Advanced Gifts Division Chairman for the March of Dimes, served on the Purchasing Consolidation Committee for Nashville Mayor Richard Fulton, served on a Task Force Committee focused on Government Efficiency for Nashville Mayor Bill Boner, member of the Elks including serving as President of the Nashville Lodge 72, and volunteered for the Women’s PGA Championship, the Sara Lee Women’s Golf Classic, and the Bell South Senior Classic at Opryland.

Bill’s passion for ISM began in 1953 after taking a role in the Purchasing Department at the National Life and Accident Insurance Company.  He joined ISM in 1954, which at that time was known as the Nashville Association of Purchasing Agents.  In 1958, the group merged with the National Association of Purchasing Managers, then again changed the name in 2002 to The Institute for Supply Management (ISM).   Bill served many roles with the Nashville Affiliate including President.  Additionally he became involved with the national organization serving as Director of the Southeastern District, National Director, and National Financial Vice President.  He participated on numerous committees including those for national conferences, conventions, and establishing educational foundations.  He was the General Chairman for the ISM1988 International Conference held right here in Nashville.

In 1988, ISM-Nashville established the William J. Burns Award, of which Bill was the first recipient.   The William J. Burns Award is ISM-Nashville’s most prestigious award.  ISM-Nashville bestows this honor upon individuals whose contribution to our affiliate is immeasurable. These recipients have made significant contributions over the years and in many different capacities.  As a professional affiliation dependent upon the skills and the dedication of our volunteers, we are honored to recognize our volunteers for all their efforts.  We are proud to present an award modeled after our friend, Bill Burns.

Bill still regularly attends ISM-Nashville monthly meetings and so can you.  Please review our schedule for upcoming events.
